Beth Shapiro, MSW, LICSW
Independent Contractor
Therapy for late adolescents and young adults
Beth uses interventions informed by CBT, DBT, and Solution Focused Therapy.
Hi, I'm Beth Shapiro.
I am a licensed Psychotherapist who enjoys working with adolescents and adults (up through age 30), who are working to manage anxiety, transitions, stress, ADHD, and/or adjustment to change. I especially enjoy working with Generation Z (those born between 1997-2012) and young Millennials as they navigate school, college, and the early years of adulthood. I work to help my clients to understand and define their own strengths and needs and change patterns that aren’t serving them.
I maintain active licenses in Minnesota, Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, and Missouri.
My Journey to Becoming a Therapist
Like all of us, I have experienced great joy, unexpected challenges, and so much “regular life” in between. My years of professional experience and training, as well as my lived experience as a person walking through various stages of life, guide me to help you identify goals and move towards them efficiently, with my support. I have found what I love most in my career is the privilege to support people as they move through phases of life, helping them manage anxiety, and navigate change. This has become even more important during the recent pandemic, as every day brought new and different challenges. I am grateful for the opportunity to walk through change with you. I believe that you know yourself best, and my goal is to assist you in identifying what works and what doesn’t, so you can live with less stress and more confidence and calm.
Supporting Clients Energizes Me
Being a Psychotherapist is an honor. I love helping people become healthier and more empowered, and seeing their efforts pay off as they achieve more fulfilling lives.
The most rewarding thing about being a Psychotherapist is seeing a person walk away with knowledge about themselves that informs their decisions and can feel more confident and excited about their next steps.
I have compassion for people and bring an open, non-judgmental presence to sessions, conveyed with warmth, understanding and humor.
- Listen actively until I understand your individual story
- Collaborate with you to set goals and identify steps to reaching them
- Be flexible as we explore pathways to change and empowerment
- Inspire hope for getting better
People who know me often say that I am a good listener who can help people understand themselves and receive support as they grow and evolve.
Our Sessions are Focused on You
Our conversations will provide you with the space to explore your thoughts, feelings, patterns, and goals. Within a safe and comfortable space, you’ll learn more about yourself and develop plans to get more of what you want from life.
It’s important to me to ensure that our process is collaborative. We will set goals that you want to achieve, and work together towards reaching them. We will customize sessions to fit your specific preferences and concerns.
As a Therapist,
I Embrace the Following Philosophies
- I believe that there is power in seeking support.
- I believe that small steps in the right direction are the biggest steps in the end.
- I believe we only heal when we take care of ourselves.
- I believe that life doesn't always have to be the way it is now.
- I believe that therapy should address the person as a whole- mind, body, & spirit.
- I believe that if we do the work of understanding and believing in ourselves, we can be in a very different space sooner than we think possible.
My Professional Background
I am a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker, licensed to practice in Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin. I received my undergraduate degree from Washington University in Psychology and Educational Studies. I received my master’s degree in Social Work from the University of Chicago. My University of Chicago education was unique as I was able to focus on big-picture interventions in public policy, and smaller, more focused interventions with individuals and families. I lived in Chicago for my first 16 years of practice, and have been back in Minneapolis since 2016.
My 20+ years of practice have been focused on children, adolescents, and young adults. Many of those years were spent working in a pediatric primary care setting where I worked closely with pediatricians to coordinate medical and mental health care. I have extensive training in the management of ADHD, Anxiety, and Life Transitions. I incorporate aspects of CBT, Mindfulness, and emotional regulation skills in my work. I especially love working with Generation Z (those born between 1997-2012) and young Millennials as they navigate school, college, and the early years of adulthood. My multistate licensure ensures I can follow some clients as they move through various life stages and relocations.
I am also the Director of Camp Care at a nearby overnight camp, where I work with college-aged staff to maintain their own mental wellness and provide support for their campers.
